For when the One Great Scorer comes to write against your name, he marks-not that you won or lost- but how you played the game.

Dawn Marie's views on sports:

Soccer: I'm not an avid watcher, but when world cup time rolls around, (or as I like to call it, copo du mundo) you can bet your butt I'm pulling out my Brazillian flag and cheering for Ronaldinho.

Tennis: I love playing it, even if I suck. I'll watch it if it's on while I'm flipping channels, and can typically be found watching the US Open. And Wimbledon.

Hockey: I love hockey, the energy, the fights, the ice. But I don't know that much about it. I don't follow the players, and I don't really know the rules. But the thing about hockey is that you don't have to know it to watch it, because it's so fast paced, it's interesting.

Basketball: I have no time for this sport. It's too easy to score, the scores are too high, the shoes make squeaky noises on the court, and the game is boring.

Golf: I watch the Master's Tournament every year. Family tradition. It reminds me of my paternal grandparents.

Football: I'm growing fond of football. I've always harbored an unnatural hatred for the sport beceause the fans are so fanatical and gross, and stupid. And the players (NFL) tend to think that they are the center of the universe. (Memo to football players, I'm [and Sarah, and Rivas] the center of the universe, not you.)And my extended family has a trashy adoration of the sport. It's nauseating. Really. But, I've been watching it more and it's maybe kind of interesting. I will NEVER be a Vikings fan though. I swear it.

Baseball: Ah, Baseball. It's no secret that I love baseball, and I love the Twins. It's a classy sport that allows for team play, and individual acheivements. I love it. And if you comment and tell me it's boring, I'm not going to be your friend anymore. So there.

Rachel's views on sports:
I love baseball. Go Twins!
I like football. Go Vikings! And quit with the boat cruises.
The only basketball I'll watch are the ND State Class B tournaments.
The only thing I know about hockey is that I hate UND and will always cheer against them (this extends to any sport though).

No views on the other sports? I know you're a Vikings fan, but it's ok, we all have flaws.

I think golf and tennis are incredibly boring. I've never played tennis, and the closest I've ever come to playing golf is mini golf. I know nothing about soccer.

Hee, I was just teasing, you didn't really have to tell me your opinions. I played tennis up until 9th grade, I even had private lessons, and I still sucked. Oh well, I'll survive.

um, what??? *taps foot*

say rah! likes football, loves baseball, is indifferent towards hockey, ignorant about soccer, hates basketball and tolerates golf only when it's time for a nap.

tennis? still up in the air. i used to watch all the majors religiously when it was the pete and andre era, but i'm kinda losing touch.

dawnmarie said...

I don't want to know why, Brian. Really, I don't.

Hee, Say Rah!, I'm sorry, I'll edit.

I used to be an avid hockey fan and I used to like English soccer.

Hockey died a slow and horrible death for me with after the season got longer, the league expanded and the quality went down the tubes. Also, a point for an overtime los? I don't want anything to do with a sport that institutes some kind of weird 'don't feel bad, you tried really really hard' pat on the back. If the score's uneven at the end of the game, you're either a winner or a loser. End of story.

With soccer, I just lost interest. It's a lot of work following a league that takes place overseas!

Football, I love. LOVE. When there isn't a game on, I'm watching the NFL Network. Can't. Get. Enough. (But, I hate the Vikings, too.)

Say Rah!, well of course Rivas. Who else?

Carly, I didn't have a problem with the rule changes, or the lockout because I'm not a die-hard fan, and never was. I just enjoy catching a game now and then. And I'm very glad to hear you will neve rlike the Vikings. You can remain my friend. *looks olbiquely at Rachel*

So you're saying I should maybe find another place to stay in a week?

dawnmarie said...

Hee. well, I may let it slide this time. But you can't wear any Vikings things in my house.

Although, i have a turtleneck and sweatshirt I've never worn I could pass off to you...

Rachel said...

I only have a Vikings t-shirt and an old Cris Carter jersey. I didn't even wear the jersey this year, and most of the time I was too ashamed to wear the t-shirt too.

Could be worse though... I could be a Packers fan!

I am a sports nut so I like all of them, play most of them.

Football and Hockey #1 to watch, golf and Tennis #1 to play.

Baseball, here is ewhat needs to happen for me to begin watching it agaiin
1. Reduce innings to 7
2. Delete designated hitter
3. Allow steriods (just kidding)
4. put a stop watch on batter and hitter so they can not take soooo much time in between pitches, unless a man is on base.
5. Reduce # of games to 80, like hockey and basketball, season is way tooo long.

That's my two cents, and I know why Brian likes golf.

Rocketstar, I'm curious what your thoughts on instant replay in baseball are?

And glad you're kidding on #3.

Rocketstar said...

I think they should use it 100%, as long as the review is looked at by an addtll ump up in the press box watching it on tv. This way it would be quick and effecient and wouldn't slow down the game.

The NFL needs to do the same, why does the ref on the field need to watch the replay.

Most calls could be done within 30 seconds.

dawnmarie said...

I disagree 100%. I do not think instant replay has any place in baseball. I'll be very, very sad if they start using it. I like that the game is still partially in the hands of human error. It makes the game human.

Everytime a coach throws his little review flag in football, I just want to call him a whiny crybaby.

When a coach in baseball thinks a call was wrong, he storms the field and gets in the umps face, and gets his butt thrown out of the game.

That's entertainment.

With regards to #4, watch a Silva v Buehrle matchup.

she makes a good point, that is a wonderful matchup to watch.

I agree 100%. Seriously... "Rabbit Ears" and "Showtime"? Classic!

How do you feel about the Ghost tag on a double play ball?

I persoannlyy think it's BS, 1/2 the time the second baseman or SS won't even touch second base and they never call it.

I would rather have replay in and get the call right.

Why is making a mistake considered a good thing?

I want the right call, I don't care whether it's humana and a humand will be making the call anyone, he'll just make the correct call.

I am getting HUGE deja vu right now, did we already talk about this?

Rachel said...

There was one time in the 2005 season when I wished baseball had instant replay. The Twins were in Detroit, Santana was pitching, and it was a long foul ball... that was called a home run. The batter even knew it was foul. You could see him cuss when he saw it go foul.

re: silva v. buehrle though, be careful...

blink and you'll miss it.

i can't bitch about that play because my dear rivas beat those hosers up in montréal once with the exact same "hit". in extras, no less.

dawnmarie said...

rach, I remember that play.

rocket, I just don't like it. I do not want instant replay in the game. I like that crazy-ass calls like AJ's champsionship series call are in the game, it provides entertainment, and controversy, it's a part of what makes baseball baseball, instead of some cheap imitation of a sport like the NFL is.

I like that baseball has 162 games--because there's so rarely an off-day. And if you miss one day because someone has the audacity to schedule a wedding or something...tomorrow's another game.

And I miss a lot of professional hockey games because I forget what nights they're playing. Baseball, I know they're playing, so I check the time.

Beth, you make valid points.
