The secret of teaching is to appear to have known all your life what you learned this afternoon.

A short history lesson. I graduated college with a degree in elementary education, with minors in English and music. I did my student teaching in West St. Paul, in a fourth grade classroom.

I did not get along with my co-operating teacher. She had very little control over this particular class, and therefore I had very little control over them.

I could have done more. She could have done more. In the end, we came to a mutual agreement that I shouldn't finish my student teaching in her classroom. My college offered to get me another placement, but I would have to put off graduation for a semester. I decided to just pull out of my student teaching and graduate with a non-licensable degree.

Today, I started a volunteer position with the M.O.R.E. (I have no idea what that stands for) school in St. Paul. I was told that I would be assisting teaching an adult E.S.L. class.

So, when I got to the school, I observe for the first half, and then the class splits into levels. I take the lower level students into a separate room and go over a worksheet with them. For the last few moments of class, the students utilize a computer program. While they were doing that, the teacher and I talked for a bit. As it turns out, I will be teaching a class of 4 students. I'm responsible for lesson plans and everything.

Maybe I should have finished my student teaching. No, seriously, I'm afraid that this experience is going to re-ignite my love of teaching, and make me want to get my license.

P.S. to sarah, one of my students is a french speaker from Togo, Africa.

Didn't say that. But dude, it's the first game! We just may have to pick a different day, perhaps a happy hour friday?

maybe if brian would get with the program and like baseball, you wouldn't have a problem.

isn't in funny in this warped little internet circle of friends the girls lke sports and the boys don't?

I don't know if I am in the cirlce, but I love sports, it's just that baseball is at the bottom of the list, too slow.

And I am doing my best to get Brian out golfing as much as possible.

dawnmarie said...

rocket - baseball is too slow, but golf is entertaining?

Don't get me wrong, I love watching the Master's every year, and I would love to learn to golf, but I'm a little confused at your logic.

and yes, you're in this little circle.

Why would that be a bad thing (you getting your teaching license)?

theresa said...

Dawn, when/if you learn to golf, you'll understand.

Sarah said...

i'm sorry rocket, yeah, you're totally in the circle! i didn't know you were into sports. i mean, you go around calling people baseballs and all, but....

Toni, it wouldn't be bad, me getting my license, but it would require me to quit my job, and survive for several months on no income whatsoever along with paying tuition for the 10 credits I need for student teaching.

So, if anyone is willing to move in with me and pay my bills, I'm all for it.

sounds like a good gig for rachel before she went all independent and got her own place. hee.

dawnmarie said...

yeah, and there are very few people i would let live with me, so it narrows my options since none of the ones i can think of have jobs.

Toni said...

True.

And who are those kids? Are they from your student teaching?

dawnmarie said...

yes. those are my students from student teaching. They were doing my major lesson for the semester.
