Unless you are prepared to give up something valuable you will never be able to truly change at all, because you'll be forever in the control of...

...things you can't give up.

At new years, Rocket posted something that nearly completely echoes my feelings on "New Years Resolutions". Why wait until the new year to change? If you need the change in your life, you probably need it now, right?

Well, after a weekend of alcohol and fast food, I've decided I'm making my "New Years Resolutions" effective immediately.

Here they are:
1. Give up soda. I know, I've done this tons of times. I succeeded once, when my goal was to give up soda for Lent, and I did it. I actually started this yesterday, and I'm doing ok. I'm bringing hot tea to work in a thermos, and it's making it quite easy. I'll allow myself one every once in awhile, but not with the regularity that I currently/used to drink it.

2. Take the stairs. I live on the second floor, and the way my building is laid out, you have to use a key to get back into the building from the stairwell, so I avoid the stairs because I'm lazy, but no more! (My resolution was originally to take the stairs at work, too, but I found out my new desk is on the 9th floor, so we'll have to work up to that, I'm currently on the second.)

3. Eat better. You're all probably groaning, oh no, not another weight loss resolution, well, it's not. I looked at my spending for last month, and I spent $246.83 eating out at restaurants, and that doesn't include any cash I spent. I buy lunch nearly every day, I eat out for dinner 4-5 times a week, well no more. This one is hard for me, because I place a high value on the money I spend out with friends, the time is more important to me than the money, so I'm just cutting out all my eating out alone stuff. And eating out for lunch no more than once per week. I grocery shopped last night, and I'm set, we'll take it one week at a time, see how it goes. My breakfast this morning rocked. (Is still rocking actually, I'm still working on it)

4. Drink more water. I'm shooting for 3 bottles a day, 20 oz each. This should be a piece of cake for me, especially not drinking soda.

5. Walk. Nick and I used to go for walks or play tennis nearly every day. Then I got sick this summer, and couldn't do it. Now, he lives far away, and we don't get to walk much. I have class two nights per week, and therefore, I'll give myself a "bye" on Mondays and every other Wednesday, otherwise, I'm making myself go for a walk. I'm doing the heart walk this spring (donations accepted, see link to the left) and I need to be conditioned for speed, baby.

I had a post-it note written out for each one of my resolutions, and those are in my planner. Which is in my school bag. Which is at home. So I think I remembered them all, but even if I didn't, this is a pretty significant list to start with anyway, and it should keep me plenty busy. Wish me luck!

Good luck with those. Eating out is a big one. I bring a sandwich and cup of yogurt to work nearly every day and while it gets boring, it's a lot cheaper than going out for lunch every day.

I cannot believe how much money I spend eating out. Good grief. imagine if I saved that money instead.

Good luck! You can DO it!

I'd be totally broke if I ate out 4-5 times a week. You can always eat at home with your friends.

Laura - thanks.

Rachel - I did good today, one day down.

Toni - thanks.

Erika - yeah, but it's a lot easier to convince them to do something out for some reason.

Beth - Thanks! You can't hear you're awesome too much.

Carly - thanks. That sounds a little bit like a goodbye though! Don't go away!

Looking back, it does sound like a good-bye. And a very formal one at that. WTF? Sorry, I just meant good luck with you new goals. Just try to get rid of me. ; )

Great resolutions. I'm currently thinking I need to come up with some kind of healthy eating resolution too, but I have frozen cookies in my freezer that I'm trying to save until Christmas, but it's not working out so far.

You'd be amazed at how much eating out can cost - my husband and I are fast food and restaurant lovers, and when I calculated it all up one month, it was $800!!! We're trying to cut down on eating out now. (*eek*)
